CHAPTER 16

Hurrying down the school hallway, Emily and Megan exchanged glances, their shoes squeaking on the linoleum. The late afternoon sun streamed through the windows. Emily hoped Glenn might remember something crucial about Hudson’s conversation with Remi Davis—something Remi had forgotten.

The teachers’ lounge was crowded with mismatched tables and chairs, scattered randomly throughout the room. On one wall, a lone bulletin board held a jumble of announcements, duty schedules, and safety code information. The crusty microwave emitted a stale odor.

Glenn sat alone, reviewing papers and sipping a cup of coffee. His salt-and-pepper hair, seldom seen under his signature tam, was slightly unkempt, and his tie hung loosely around his neck. Emily couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. At his age, he could be retired and enjoying the simple pleasures of life, like working on his farm. To only have students and colleagues as your companions? She wished Quinn would give him a chance and let him into her life. He was obviously smitten with her.

When Megan explained why they were there, Glenn’s eyes widened with interest.

“I do remember that conversation,” Glenn said, leaning forward. “Hudson was... intense. Hungry for information about Nico. It struck me as odd at the time.”

Megan pulled a notebook from her purse. As Glenn recounted the details, she scribbled them down.

“Did Hudson mention anything specific about why he was interested in Nico?” Megan asked, her pen poised over the notepad. The clock on the wall ticked a little too loudly.

Glenn tapped the table, pausing. “He didn't say outright, but... there was something he muttered under his breath. Something about ‘family connections’ and ‘old debts.’ It didn't make much sense to me at the time.”

Emily’s pulse quickened. Family connections? Old debts? What could that mean?

“After he left, Remi and I were concerned he’d catch up with Nico, so I followed him. I stopped him as he was about to initiate contact. I asked if I could help him and he shook his head, looking nervous. I put my hands on my hips and didn’t leave until I was sure Nico was out of sight.”

“Did you see him after that?”

“Not at the fair. At the haunted house, of course. Anyway, after I packed up my booth, I headed straight to Quinn’s house before going to my place and I warned her about Hudson Finch. Told her he was asking questions about Nico. Her face turned white she was so worried. She’s an exceptional mother but a little overprotective if you know what I mean.”

“So, you didn’t see him between leaving the fair and the haunted house.”

“No, but…”,

“But what?” asked Megan.

“I’m not sure, but I think he may have followed me home. I made the mistake of saying something like ‘see you at home’ to Nico and maybe that reporter thought if he followed me, he could catch up to Nico.” Glenn gathered up his papers. “If you’ll excuse me, I’m heading home now.” He slipped into his jacket and tipped his tam with a bow.

“We need to talk to Quinn,” Emily said, standing up abruptly.
